Book review: Come With Me by Ronald Malfi

Synopsis

Aaron Decker’s life changes one December morning when his wife Allison is killed. Piloted by grief and an increasing sense of curiosity, Aaron embarks on a journey to discover what Allison had been doing in the weeks prior to her death.

Yet Aaron is unprepared to discover the dark secrets Allison kept, the death and horror that make up the tapestry of her hidden life. And with each dark secret revealed, Aaron becomes more and more consumed by his obsession to learn the terrifying truth about the woman who had been his wife, even if it puts his own life at risk.

Review

With incredibly high praise blurbs from the likes of Josh Malerman and Rio Youers, I was really excited to pick up this new horror-thriller.

This was a hunt for a killer, a battle through grief and a ghost story all in one. I definitely found this one to be on the creepier thriller side than full blown horror, but there were certainly moments in this story that gave me goosebumps. If you’re a reader that likes your horror on the literary side, this one would be a good option.

From page one I knew that even if the story didn’t grab me, I would still enjoy the way in which it was told. Malfi’s writing completely sucks you in! His style is eloquent, and he can really dive into deep human emotions. Despite having a touch of the speculative, the whole book felt pretty realistic!

The story in this book had me hooked within the first few pages. The mystery of what Aaron’s wife was doing in secret before she died really held my interest throughout and I’m happy to say I didn’t see some of the twists coming.

I’m quite fussy when it comes to thrillers as so many of them use the same plot points and predictable twists and tropes, but because of the ghostly element to this story, there was plenty going on to the keep the story fresh and exciting.

So glad I got the chance to read this one. If you’re looking for a dark thriller with speculative elements, whilst still feeling very human and realistic, this is one to pick up!

I was gifted this book by Titan Books in an exchange for an honest review.
