Firstly thank you to the author for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I was initially drawn to this one because I really liked the concept of a character having to perform to escape the tricky situation she’d found herself in. It immediately made me think this could be something you’d find in a Saw movie. Whilst I did draw that comparison, I still think this was a very unique plot line for the book to take and I enjoyed it’s originality. I did, however, guess some of the conclusion of the novel. This wasn’t disappointing but you’ve got to admit you always want a thriller to completely surprise you at the end!
This is a debut novel for White, and for the most part it was well written and an easy book to get into. The only thing that got on my nerves was the over use of every characters name. Maybe it’s just me, but I rarely say somebody’s name whilst I’m mid conversation with them. I think the number of ‘LJ’s’ could have been drastically decreased and this would have helped make some of the conversations feel a lot more natural and realistic.
I had mixed feelings on our main characters. I’m often partial to a slightly unlikable character, but I couldn’t really connect with LJ like I had wanted to. She didn’t fall enough on either the nice or nasty side for me to really make up my mind how to feel about her.
Overall though, this was a promising debut with some good thriller moments and I’d definitely be interested in seeing what White comes up with next!
