Over a year ago I decided to start a “first impressions” feature that I did literally twice and then never carried on. I guess I don’t always have something to say at the beginning of a book so I didn’t see the point in carrying it on. However, sometimes you just find a book that sparks a sudden interest (or disinterest) and I wanted to get back to talking about that on my blog.
I definitely won’t be doing this for all books, but right now I’m reading something I already want to talk about!
Halcyon by Rio Youers
I’ve been lucky enough to be gifted this novel by Titan Books as part of their blog tour. My review will be posted on the 30th.
It’s been a long time since I’ve picked up a book that I’ve instantly wanted to talk about!
Firstly, lets take a moment to admire the cover! It’s perfectly spooky, not cheesy like a lot of horror covers are. I know that I would stop to pick this up in a bookstore if I walked past it!
When I first saw this book was essentially about a cult, I was super excited to read it. I find cults insanely interesting and I haven’t come across many fiction books that feature them, so I jumped on the chance to read and review this.
Upon opening the first page, I’ve been hooked. Instantly you’re hit with the image of a young girl going into what seems to be a paranormal, psychic fit. Not often do you go into a book that starts off so suddenly and dramatically! It caught my attention right away, which is exactly what a book should do! I’m only 50 pages in, but we’ve already been through so much and had a small taste of what’s to come from this “self-sustaining community”.
The writing is fluid and structurally, it makes me want to keep reading, even if my lunch break is over and I should be getting back to work!
I’m so excited to see what’s to come in this book. I already have the tiniest hunch on how this novel might play out, but at the same time, it could go anywhere!
