Iconic movies I probably should have seen by now

Iconic movies I probably should have seen by now

I wanted to post something a little bit different today, so I thought I’d have a look at Empire’s 100 Greatest Movies list and see which out of the top 50 I haven’t seen yet… this could be interesting. I got this post idea form the lovely Orangutan Librarian!

30 might seem like a lot to go through, but looking through the list I’ve actually watched quite a few!

Number 1: The Godfather

This is always one of those films that’s at the top of movie lists and still I’ve never had the inclination to just sit down and watch it… I have nothing against the type of film it is or the actors in it, I’ve just never wanted to watch it, for whatever reason.

Number 2: Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back

OK, truth is, I’ve watched one of the Star Wars films but I can’t remember which one? I don’t think it was this one because I don’t remember Darth Vader being in it. I didn’t like whichever SW film I saw so I won’t be watching any of the others…

Number 6: The Goodfellas

I have seen a bit of this… I want to watch it actually I’ve just never sat down to watch it. I love me a bit of Robert DeNiro. Ray Liotta on the otherhand… creepy.

Number 9: Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope

Oh hello again Star Wars… we know why I haven’t seen this film already.

Number 12: The Godfather Part II

Now why would I have watched film number 2 if I hadn’t watched film number 1?

Number 13: Blade Runner

Weirdly, I don’t even know what this film is about. How I’ve managed to avoid all aspects of the story I have no idea, especially since the sequel came out recently! I don’t even know if I want to watch this one ’cause I don’t know what the plot is!

Number 22: Apocalypse Now

I have been told loads of time to watch this and that I will enjoy it but there are so many other movies I’ve put before it. Maybe I should shove it up my watch list.

Number 25: Terminator 2: Judgment Day

OK, I might have seen this one but I can’t for the life of me remember if it was this one or the first one! However, Terminator has never really interested me so if I haven’t seen this, I won’t bother watching it.

Number 26: Heat

Another top DeNiro film I haven’t seen! Again, don’t actually know what this one is about…

Number 27: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

A dislike of Clint Eastwood has been drummed into me from a young age, as my mum doesn’t like him. I also watched Gran Tarino once and thought he was a pretty cardboard actor so I’m not bothered about watching this one.

Number 28: Casablanca

Eh, romance films used to be my thing but I’ve grown out of them now so I have no desire to watch this one.

So there we have it, there’s just a few of the many thousands of films I have yet to watch. However, these are the ones that have supposedly changed the shape of cinema and I probably should have watched… can’t help it if I don’t like Star Wars though.

What iconic movies have you not seen?

  1. I want to see casablanca. Star wars – I saw the latest and slept off, (either the movie or date was boring, I didn’t get a call back so I think date didn’t like)
Blade runner and godfather I have seen. Loved the former, okay about latter

  2. I love this post. Such a great idea and will defo give you some ideas for film nights!
Glenn and I watched all of the Star Wars for the first time at the end of last year (actually that a lie we went to the cinema for our first ever date to see one of them but I really wasn’t interested at that point) and I would honestly say you NEED to watch them! They are fantastic!!! xx

  3. I have watched none of these besides the original start wars trilogy. I’m curious about Blade Runner, because I watched the most recent one and despite all the praise it got I hated it. I think I’ll read the book it’s based on first, although it’s been sitting on my shelf for close to a year now.

      1. When you do get to it I hope you enjoy it! It doesn’t look at all like my kind of movie, though, so I don’t plan to watch it no matter how many “must see” lists it’s on. 🙂

  4. I loooove this! I’ve never seen The Godfather either and yet I know that “I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse” is from it.

I didn’t watch The Matrix until a few years ago, which always shocked people. And I’ve never seen Fight Club. Gosh, there are soo many famous films I haven’t seen!

  5. This is such an awesome post!! There are quite a few on this list that I haven’t seen and really don’t plan on ever watching. Like, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Casablanca and The Godfather movies…I’ve really just never had the desire to watch them. I love Star Wars though, I grew up with them (which I think definitely helps).

  6. Okay, so the only movies on this list (that I’ve seen) that are worth watching are the og Star Wars movies. I think the newer ones are definitely not worth watching, but I enjoy the original 3.
If you ever get the chance to watch them (preferably with a friend) you totally should but I also understand why you wouldn’t want to.

  7. Don’t worry, I haven’t watched most of the movies you mentioned, either. I do enjoy Star Wards though, so I have watched all the movies. Also don’t force yourself to watch them just because it’s so often referenced and people keep saying you should read it! If you don’t like sci-fi (which is what Blade Runner is), or romance (Casablanca), then don’t watch it 🙂

  8. 100% recommend watching episode 4, 5 & 6 of Star Wars. Empire Strikes Back is my absolute favourite. The first half hour of A New Hope is a little slow but once you get through it, the rest of the films are so good! Can also recommend Terminator 2.
I’ve actually never seen any of the Godfather movies either! Not sure I want to though despite how good everyone says they are.

  9. I’m a Star Wars nerd…so I’m biased…but you MUST watch them! The originals are the BEST out of the series in my opinion, though Rogue One was really well done.

I love The Godfather, but it’s long from what I remember. The second one was well done too but the third was blah.

Terminator!! My mom got me into these films when I was younger. The second one has some really funny moments in it.

I can’t think of many iconic movies that I haven’t seen – my mom and I used to have lots of bonding moments by watching all these iconic movies from the 60’s to 90’s. Kind of a nerd that way ha-ha!

    1. It turns out I have watched A New Hope and I didn’t enjoy it… just found it too cheesy like I do with the Marvel films!
I have watched a lot of iconic films, mainly horror and dark thriller ones though, as that’s what my mum & I enjoy the most 😀

      1. Ha-ha!! Oh yes…it’s TOTALLY cheesy. But I think that’s what I love about it. I also grew up on these so I feel slightly biased towards them *oh well*

Oh man…you and the horror ha-ha! I have watched some good iconic horror films. The ones I’m thinking of are “Freddy Kruger”, the Jason films, and “The Lost Boys” (vampires = fun times).

  10. I wanna say i’ve seen the Godfather, but i think it was just parts of it…

Blade Runner used to be one of my favourite movies. Or so i thought! In preparation of the new one, i rewatched it last year, and i must say, i did wonder what i liked about it so much and whether i’m confusing it with something else.. 😀

I think the only one from here i haven’t actually seen is Casablanca. The others all ring a bell.

I hope you get to watch them soon 🙂
