OK, so I know we’re a little further than halfway through the year now, but I think it’s still OK for me to do this post, right? Plus, Krystin kind of tagged me in the official “Mid Year Freak Out Tag” so it’s just like I’m doing a cheat version of that.
My reading year so far has been… disappointing in all honesty. It seems lots of my highly anticipated books have let me down this year, with me even DNFing Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage (review for that coming at a later date).
So today I wanted to share with you some happy bookish feelings! These are my favourite books of the year so far!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My first 5-star read of the year was the fantastic novel The Beloveds by Maureen Lindley. Literally from page one I was hooked on this book and managed to finish reading it in less than 24 hours! The writing style was captivating, and the story was so unique even if it did follow a pretty standard plot. Not to mention the narrator in this book was my favourite kind of narrator! Betty Stash was narcissistic, crazy, and delusional, it was so much fun becoming her in this book.

The book after my first 5 star read was yet another 5 star read! God bless The Stepford Wives by Ira Levin! I’d been wanting to read this since discovering my love for Levin’s writing last year, and I’m bummed it took me so long to get around to it, but I’m so glad I’ve finally read it! This was a super creepy read with Levin’s signature simple but menacing writing. It was a really quick read and definitely didn’t disappoint!

Next up comes one of my first reads of the year, NOS4A2 by Joe Hill. I’d never read any of Hill’s work before so I was so happy to receive this one from my Uncle for my birthday. I ended up really loving it, even though it didn’t turn out to be a 5 star read for me. The atmosphere was sooo creepy and Charlie Manx is one of the best villains I’ve ever come across!

Another horror novel on the list! A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay had been on my shelves for ages, it was another one of those books that took me waaayyyy too long to pick up. Although this didn’t turn out as I had originally thought it would it was still very enjoyable and spooky. The ending of this is one that’s definitely stayed with me and it’s still something I ponder over in the dark hours when I can’t sleep.

The Killing Lessons by Saul Black is a very recent read, but it’s one of the best crime-police-procedural books I’ve read in a long time! I loved the motive of the crimes, the characters and the writing. If only the end hadn’t dragged, it could have been a big ol’ 5-star book!
So there we have it! Those have been the books I’ve loved the most this year, so far! It’s a shame this list isn’t longer, I’ve had a bit of a 3-star book takeover in 2018… I’m hoping the second half of the year will treat me better.
Have you read any of these books, did you also love them? What have been your favourite books this year?
Note: I am on holiday for 2 weeks! I have access to WiFi but I probably won’t be checking my blog or social media too often, so please excuse my late responses to your comments!
I have been curious about the Stepford Wives because I enjoyed them idea behind the movie but never heard anything about the book. Your high praise just sold me on it!

Ugh I’ve been having a disappointing reading year as well! I’ve read a couple of stand outs, but for the most part I’ve been really underwhelmed. I hope the second half of 2018 gets better for all of us!
