A look back on my pre-orders

A look back on my pre-orders (1)

Hello bookish friends!

I’ve pre-ordered quite a number of books for the coming year, and while it got me thinking I should do another “What have I got on pre-order” post, (that post is coming soon!), it also made me think about all the books I had previously pre-ordered.

So that’s what this post is going to be about. It’s a look back at the books I pre-ordered last year (posts about those are here and here) and how (if) they’ve progressed through my TBR – e.g have I read them yet and what did I think of them?

I gave this away as a present. I can’t believe I pre-ordered this novel back in 2016! I ordered this novel because everyone was going mad about it. I didn’t mind The Girl on the Train, but I wasn’t mad about it like some people so I wasn’t hugely fussed about this one either.

I forgot I had even pre-ordered this one and when it arrived, I was worrying about what I could get my boyfriend’s mum for her birthday. Knowing she has really enjoyed The Girl on the Train, I decided I would gift her this book instead of keeping it for myself.

I have not read this book. I was rejected this book on Netgalley TWICE, so I was really eager to read it, hence the pre-order, but since then, it’s just remained sat on my shelf, gathering dust, not being read.

People went mad about this book last year and I’m really bummed I sailed through all the hype without picking it up.

I have not read this book. This is another book that I got rejected for on Netgalley, and being butthurt about it, I instantly pre-ordered it. I loved the idea of a novel told from Lizzy Borden’s perspective!

I think (or maybe I’m just making excuses for myself) that I would have picked this one up, had it not been for the vastly conflicting thoughts on it. Some loved it, others hated it. I was so prepared for this to be great, I didn’t like the thought it could be awful so shied away from it instead.

I have not read this book. This pre-order was a little bit random, to be honest. I think I was just in the mood for a horror novel, and this one sounded like it could be good. I haven’t heard anything about this novel from other bloggers so it’s pretty low-key, and it means I don’t really know what people think of it.

I actually have almost picked this one up several times, but it never made it to the top of the list.

I started reading this one, but didn’t finish it. If you’re on OG follower of mine, you will know all about this book. I was bonkers for this book before it came out. I thought it sounded so creepy and mysterious, and I loved the cover!

I did actually pick this one up, as I said, I was so ridiculously excited for this book… but I didn’t finish it. Honestly, I was in a slump when I picked it up so didn’t click with it at all and then I misplaced it. I don’t even know if I know where it is now! I hope it’s just on my shelf as I would like to give it another go.

I have read this one. I wasn’t initially interested in this novel when I saw it on Netgalley. Then, I saw reviews upon reviews for it and everyone was raving about how excellent it was – I didn’t want to miss out! I requested it on NG quite a while after it had been uploaded so I didn’t exactly think I was going to be accepted, and obviously I wasn’t.

I took this one away to Malta with me this summer and read it while I was lounging out around the pool. I thought it was very thought-provoking, emotional, and powerful. In the end, I gave it 4 stars. You can read my review here.

I have not read this one. After reading Bird Box, which I absoultely LOVED and have recommended to loads of horror readers, I was super eager for another Malerman book. When I saw this one was coming out I instantly jumped onto Amazon to pre-order it.

After seeing a few advanced reviews for it, my excitement for it was dampened slightly and when it arrived I just put it on my shelf and forgot about it.

I cancelled the order as I received the novel from the publisher. After reading The White Road by Sarah Lotz, I really wanted to dig my teeth in to other books that were similar. This one was coming out so it seemed like perfect timing! As soon as I heard about it I pre-ordered it.

Later, I noticed the book had been uploaded onto Bookbridgr and I thought I might as well request it and see if I could get it, and I did! I’m ashamed that I still haven’t read this… It’s going on to my TBR soon!

I have not read this book. I was super excited to see this book was coming out as it is a sequel to The Girl with All the Gifts, which I really enjoyed! But again, even though I was anticipating it, when it arrived I simply plonked it on my shelves and never looked at it again. Why-o-why?

I have read this one. This is another one of those books that I was rejected for on Netgalley so rushed over to Amazon to pre-order it. I really liked the sound of this one as I thought it sounded dark and disturbing.

I also took this one on holiday with me last year. I was really disappointed by this one in the end. The writing was weak and the characters were unlikable. In the end, I gave it 3 stars. You can read my review here.

I cancelled the pre-order. When I pre-ordered this, I remember it being about £25, quite a lot of money for a book I wouldn’t even know if I would like. I love the cover art for it, but I still didn’t want to spend that much. Therefore, I cancelled the pre-order to save a bit of money.

Since this has been published, I haven’t seen any reviews for it on blogs, but I do know that it doesn’t have the greatest of reviews. I do still want to read this one, but maybe at a time when I have less unread books.

I cancelled the order as I received the novel from the publisher, and I have read it.  When I first noticed this book I didn’t actually think it sounded too great. To me, it sounded like a mediocre, done before thriller, but I still requested it on Netgalley (because I have a problem). When I was rejected for it, after seeing some fantastic reviews, I pre-ordered it.

I also took this away with me to Malta and I absolutely loved it! This novel is really unsettling and dark. I thought the narration was pretty unique for the thriller genre and I loved/hated the main character. In the end, I gave it a full 5 stars. You can read my review here.

So there we have it! That’s a big ‘ol recap of all my pre-orders from last year and how they’ve progressed through my TBR… if they even have progressed at all.

I can’t believe how bad I am at buying books and the not reading them! Thanks to doing this post, I’ve decided to create myself a ‘must be read in 2018′ list, and all of these pre-orders are going on it.

Keep your eyes peeled for a “what have I got on pre-order” post soon! (Yes, I’m still keeping my current pre-orders after this embarrassment of a post)

I’d love to hear if you’ve read any of these books, and whether you liked them or not!

  1. I loved this post! I actually never preorder books, except for this year! I preordered ACOTAR’s fourth book (can’t remember the name currently) and am very eager to get ahold of it. But I’ve also been spurned on Netgalley and have gone straight out to get the book myself so I know how you feel!!

  2. Great post! I myself rarely ever pre-order books unless I really know the author, I’m really excited about the book, or it’s a continuation of a series. I do understand that it must’ve been hard to keep track of all your pre-orders when you do it so often! 🙂

  3. I rarely pre-order things anymore because Amazon messed up my pre-order once, and just never again. And I’m poor. 😂

I have read The Roanoke Girls and I loved it! So messed up! I still have Best Day Ever, The Mentor, Into The Water, and The Marsh King’s Daughter on my TBR! I’m hoping to read all of those this year! 😄
