Today I’m going to talk about a few authors who are new to me from 2017. These are authors whose books I really loved and will definitely be checking out more of their work in the future.
I got this idea from seeing people participate in Shanah’s Top 5 Tuesday meme and I really liked the topic! I don’t do a Tuesday theme anymore, but this topic was too good to pass up.

Ira Levin
I read Rosemary’s Baby by Levin earlier in the year (as if you didn’t already know!) and I absolutely LOVED his writing. I have already put all the rest of his work on my TBR! He’s written some really popular stuff, not only Rosemary’s Baby, but also The Stepford Wives, The Boys from Brazil, and a Kiss Before Dying!

Beth Underdown
Underdown came out with her debut book, The Witchfinder’s Sister, this year and I absolutely adored it. You would have never guessed it was a debut, her writing is that of a professional 30-books-under-the-belt author! The whole book flowed so well together, was filled with fantastically built characters and I loved her ability to tell the story. I can’t wait to see what else she can come up with!

P. D. James
I only very recently read my first P. D. James work, in the form of short stories, and I instantly fell in love with her way of writing. I wouldn’t class her work as “cosy” – not after reading A Commonplace Murder!! – but some of her stuff is definitely more light hearted than what I usually read. However, because I love old time crime stories, which tend to be a little more passive, I got on with her work perfectly, really enjoyed each short I read and definitely now want to delve into more of her work.

Josh Malerman
After reading Bird Box early on in the year, I knew that Malerman would be one to watch out for. The atmosphere in that book was insane! I thought his character building and scene setting was really great and the whole plot was fantastically unique! He did in fact come out with another novel this year, Black Mad Wheel, which I have but have not yet read… I’m really looking forward to sinking my teeth into it.

Sarah Lotz
Although there are some very conflicting opinions on Lotz’s work, I personally really enjoyed her writing when I read The White Road this year. I realise now that most of these authors are horror writers, but when you find a good horror writer, they stand-out amongst others. Again, I thought Lotz’s writing was so atmospheric and I absolutely fell in love with her character Simon. I really want to read her book The Three and Day Four!

So there we have it, these are the authors I read for the first time this year, who I really loved, and will definitely read more of their work.
Who are some new authors you read this year that you really liked? Also, have you read from anyone on my list? What did you think of their work?
Fantastic list! I want to read more Josh Malerman too! He was very good at creating suspense with never really telling you what you should be afraid of!

I didn’t realise Levin wrote The Stepford Wives! I remember watching the movie as a kid and thought it was so freaky! Underdown’s The Witchfinders Sister was on my top ten favourites for 2017, I thought it was absolutely brilliant! Definitely keeping an eye out for more from her 😉 As always, great post Zuky 👍

I’m curious to try Levin (either Stepford Wives or Rosemary’s Baby) but also PD James. I’m always curious about mystery writers who straddle the line between cozy and not, so she could be a good choice for me.

I’ve read everything P.D. James ever wrote. I envy you reading them all for the first time. Her mystery series featuring the character Adam Dalgliesh is superb.

He’s a very good author, just from the one book I’ve read anyway. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of his stuff!
