My DNF books of 2017

BOOK REVIEW BANNER -DNF

So this year, I finished a great amount of books, but I also DNF’d a pretty large amount too! There were 12 books I did not finish this year, due to one reason or another.

Keep reading to find out which books I couldn’t finish, and why!

(These are in no particular order)

Infinite Ground by Martin MacInnes

I couldn’t finish this one simply because it was so confusing! I really couldn’t wrap my head around it, even though I really, really wanted to like it!

The Doll Funeral by Kate Hamer

I was so ready to love this one after I had read Hamer’s The Girl in the Red Coat, but this was too airy-fairy for me.

The Mercy of the Tide by Keith Rosson

This came at the wrong time for me. I was looking for something fast-paced after reading a similar slow-paced emotional mystery, Idaho, before this one. I would like to try and read this one again at some point, but I probably won’t get round to it!

Black Water Lilies by Michel Bussi

I wasn’t enjoying this one when I read it, I found the writing really clunky, but then I happened to stumble upon someone’s review where they hadn’t tagged their spoilers, so I found out the conclusion… helpful!

Butterfly on the Storm by Walter Lucius

Eugh, this book just didn’t sit right with me at all. The main character, Farah, was made out to be some sort of goddess who didn’t wear a bra and it all made me feel very uncomfortable.

The Search by Howard Linskey

I couldn’t find the motivation to pick up this book when I was reading it. The characters didn’t gel with me and I couldn’t get my interest up for the story.

Roses of May by Dot Hutchison

I really didn’t like this one! The writing was totally YA, even though it’s not advertised as such, and the story was weird. The relationship between fully adult FBI agent and teenage girl was just creepy, and nothing happened within 100 pages. Boring.

One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus

I gave this YA mystery a try because I thought I might like it, but I didn’t. Turns out I can’t read YA even when it’s mystery/thriller orientated.

You Don’t Know Me by Imran Mahmood

I really, really wanted to love this one but I couldn’t get past the colloquial language! It did my head in and made me completely detached from the story. I also found this book really dull, not a lot happened even after reading over half the book!

The Walls by Hollie Overton

I have decided I just cannot get on with Overton’s writing! This totally lost my interest within like 20 pages. I found the bit of the story I did read completely unrealistic and boring.

The End of Temperance Dare by Wendy Webb

It’s a shame I didn’t like this one because I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately I found the writing clunky and the main character annoying!

The Wardrobe Mistress by Patrick McGrath

I did take a gamble by requesting this one on Netgalley, and unfortunately it didn’t pay off! I was interested in this one but it wasn’t ominous and fast-paced enough for my liking and lost my interest quite quickly.

So there you have it! Those are the books I’ve marked down as DNF this year. Hopefully I won’t DNF anymore before the year is up!

I’d love to know which books have you DNF’d this year? Did you enjoy any of these books that I didn’t?

  1. I need to get better at not finishing books! I always feel some sense of responsibility to finish what I started–who knows why I’m that way with books, because I certainly don’t follow that rule in any other aspect of my life! haha

      1. I definitely felt anxious for a while but it’s now got to the point where I’ve got so many books in there I’m past worrying! I don’t really request anything on there anymore so it’s less pressing for me to get books read now, all my stuff on there is old long ago published stuff! But I can’t definitely relate to the anxiety!

  2. I really liked One of Us is Lying but it’s definitely more YA than mystery. I think I figured out who did it at the start so was mostly just loving the Breakfast Club vibe (I love that film).

I’m not sure I would say I DNF’d any books this year. There are a couple I put on pause but I will probably go back to them at some point. I haven’t totally written them off.
