This week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme was “fandoms” and I’m really not into that kind of thing. I support people and TV shows etc, but I wouldn’t say I’m in a “fandom” so I’ve decided to pick an old, random TTT to do for this week instead.
So, this week I’m doing “books I almost put down but didn’t”. I actually have a shelf for this on my Goodreads, so this is going to be easy to complete this week, hehe!
The Trees by Ali Shaw – I was really looking forward to this book after I had bought it, that as soon as I got home, I started it, which is unusual for me, I usually wait months before I read a book as I have such a huge TBR. This started off pretty well but it’s quite a big book and towards the middle I felt my brain giving up. I pushed through with it, and the ending got better, but I only rated this 3 stars in the end.
The Secret by Katerina Diamond – I know I talk about this book all the time on my blog, but really, what a waste of my time. I should have given this one up. I hated this sequel to The Teacher so much! The same characters from before felt completely changed. They were awkward and stiff and the plot was rubbish in comparison to the one in the first book. Bleh, I would not recommend this book. Even though thousands of others have enjoyed it, I did not.
Fractured by Catherine McKenzie – I ended up giving this read 4 stars, but for I was hesitant to read it after I had started. I hate infidelity in books because it’s one of my biggest fears so I find it really difficult to read about it and I thought it was going to appear a lot in this book. In the end I managed to get through it and was really impressed with the story and the writing!
The Night Parade by Ronald Malfi – the only reason I almost put this one down, was because it felt overly long. It seemed to go on forever and I kind of got bored with it in the middle. It definitely could have been shortened in editing.
We’ve Come to Take You Home by Susan Gandar – I didn’t get a lot of this book. The changing of perspectives got me really confused at points and the twist in the story was weird enough to make me consider giving it up, but this was my first ever Netgalley book, so I knew I couldn’t!
Baby Doll by Hollie Overton – agh, this is another one I should have given up on. I felt this book was seriously unrealistic, there was an annoying love triangle in it and the characters were all so juvenile. I personally can’t understand why this is garnering so much attention.
The Lake House by Kate Morton – this was my first Morton book and I was really excited for it because it mixed historical fiction with mystery but this was the cheesiest book I think I’ve ever read. I almost gave up with this one because it was eye roll worthy, the “twist” at the end was so soppy and lame.
Crooked Little Lies by Barbara Taylor Sissel – this book is marketed all wrong. It sounds like it’s going to be a bit moody, a bit mysterious, but in reality, it’s a family drama with the worst plot twist you can possibly imagine. I should have given this one up too.
The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters – I’m kind of glad I finished this one because I feel like if I hadn’t I may have attempted to pick up another Waters book. This one just wasn’t for me. I found it really boring and slow.
The Demon by Hubert Selby Jr – another book I’ve talked about quite a lot on this blog. It took me an age to read because it involved so much infidelity and was overall, a really dark book, but I’m glad I pushed through and finished it off, it was actually a very good book!
These were the books I very almost marked as DNF, but in the end, didn’t. I’m aware there are a couple of books on this list that people love, but for me, they weren’t worth my time!
Have you read any of these books and agree or disagree with my thoughts?
Great post! I’m not into fandom either so didn’t join with TTT because I couldn’t come up with a different theme.

Thank you! I just looked through tier list and used an old one haha. I have things I love but I’m not part of any “fandom”

I wonder if it’s more of an American thing?

Maybe? Although HP and Dr Who are the first things that come to mind when I think of fandoms and they’re both UK stuff. In terms of celebrity fandoms like Smilers (Miley Cyrus) and Beliebers etc I think that’s totally American!

That’s true I hadn’t thought about HP and Dr Who!

I don’t personally like either of the two but that’s what I think of in terms of fandoms

Fractured was a good read but I didn’t think it was anything special, I expected better I think. I know I already told you, but The Secret was awesome 😛 Hihi

I just finished The Lake House a few weeks ago. I really was into the book and enjoyed the flips from the present day to the past. If I had to rate the first 2/3 or even 3/4 of the book, I’d probably give it 4 stars. And then the ending. Oh my gosh she tied it up with not only a neat bow, but one that is fancy and frilly and just over the top.I was not crazy about the ending. Not that I want a sad ending per say, but everything just worked itself out so well. And after 70 years?! Please. Great list this week! 🙂 I focused on <a href="https://hiddenstaircase.net/2017/04/04/ttt-fandom-freebie-full-of-sherlock-silliness/"the silliness of the Sherlock fandom.

I can 100% agree with you there. The ending was so over the top & cheesy! I will check out your post now 😋

This is why I rarely DNF… Sometimes I just have this compulsive need to know how it ends, no matter how much I don’t actually like it. And also, what if I end up liking it?
Decisions, decisions… Great post, Zuky! 🙂

Thanks Sophie! I’ve got to the point where I quite often DNF books but there’s always a few I can’t quite bring myself to give up 😊

Well, I do feel like I need to start being a bit more selective.
There’s just no time to read everything (especially if I’m wasting it on bad books).

My thoughts exactly, I hate wasting my time on a bad book!

I haven’t read any of them but I have The Lake House and The Secret on my readlist. I like cheesy though so perhaps I won’t mind it in The Lake House as much as you did.

I hope you enjoy it more than me! 😀

It’s always a risk pushing through books when you’re tempted to put them down! Some of the best books I’ve read have been slow starting, and others I’ve just regretted wasting my time on!

I feel exactly the same way. It’s always a risk, like you say, and sometimes it can be worth it, others time not 🙂
