Tips for controlling your TBR pile… anyone?

fallen

Help. I’ve fallen into the trap of adding too many books to my TBR pile. It’s looming above me, it’s sky high, it feels so unattainable. How can anyone ever keep their TBR under control? Seriously, I need some ideas!

At the moment, all I do to try and control it is a great weekly/bi-weekly meme made by Lia @ Lost in a Story which helps me sift through some of the older books on my Goodreads tbr shelf to decide whether reading them still appeals to me or not. While it seems to be working, I’m removing around 5 books a week, it still doesn’t feel enough because my list probably grows by 5 books a week too!

My Goodreads tbr shelf is currently on 600+! I have around 30 books on my Netgalley account that need to be read, 25 on my Kindle and another 50, or so, on my bookshelf at home… how did it get to this?!

I’ve tried no buy weeks, and I’m pretty good at them tbh. I can go a whole week without buying a book, sure. I can go a whole two weeks without buying a book. I’ve also tried to stop requesting books on Netgalley, it’s not the end of the world if I don’t get to read a book before it’s out, I can always buy, but free is just so appealing!

Do you guys have any tips on how I can reduce my tbr pile significantly, or ways to keep it at a steady number, for now?

p.s. I hate myself for that image I went out of my way to make…

  1. I relate to this on a spiritual level 😛

I accepted a long time ago that I have a bit of a book buying addiction, but as I always say to cheer myself up about it: ‘There are far worse things to be addicted to than books.’

Going through old books on Goodreads and removing ones that no longer appeal is a great idea; I may steal that myself.

I’d say try and be a mood reader. If you’re reading the books that you want to read rather than the ones you feel you should be reading at the time, it might not actually reduce your TBR but may at least make it seem a little less daunting.

    1. I like the idea of mood reading! That’s why I put books down as DNF a lot of the time, I’m just not feeling them.
Yes, I love buying books I don’t necessarily need and like you, I tell myself there are worse things to be addicted too… but then I’m also addicted to buying makeup and clothing, so my pay check really doesn’t stretch very far! Tbf, I’ve cut down my clothing and makeup buying… so I can get more books lol 😛

  2. Surprisingly, I don’t spend much money on buying books and I currently read more books than I add to my tbr. So that helps. I am more critical about which books I add and which I request to netgalley. Only if I think I would really like the book, I add it.
About buying books, I set aside money for that, and only if I have saved enough money I can buy a book (except sometimes, I just give myself books for special occasions).
I have no clue how to get your tbr down besides just reading a lot and removing books you don’t like anymore. Good luck!

    1. I really need to get into the habit of reading more, but I find when I have a book I’m not really that into, I find that I can’t get past it and I don’t then feeling like reading other things, and that’s exactly how I feel at the moment!
I should really try to save money for books but every month when mym paycheck comes around I’m so just tempted to buy new books lol
      I’ll get there eventually, I’m sure 🙂

      1. Ahh that can be annoying! I know the feeling. I don’t know how to get past that besides just not reading books you don’t like but yeah.. you never know that before you start.

  3. I’m sorry but I can’t be of much help either XD Even if I don’t buy too many books, I always end up finding something to add to my TBR, especially while browsing everyone else’s blogs.
I see you’ve already made good use of the Down the TBR Hole feature, though, so that’s one step closer to bringing it down a couple books at a time 😉
